First Conditional

This lesson introduces the first conditional to A2-level learners, focusing on its use in describing real and likely future situations. The lesson follows a structured progression from guided instruction to independent application, using a communicative approach to support both accuracy and fluency. Instructional Approach

​

This lesson uses a PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production) framework to introduce and reinforce the first conditional. Instruction begins with guided discovery and modeling, followed by controlled practice to build accuracy, and concludes with communicative activities that promote fluency and confidence.

 

Lesson Structure

1. Warmer (5 minutes)

     Students respond to a prompt about future plans to activate prior knowledge and

     introduce the concept of future thinking.

2. Presentation (13 minutes)

     The teacher introduces the first conditional using a model sentence and a visual                   timeline to demonstrate the relationship between condition and result. Students are           guided to identify the structure and meaning through questioning.

3. Controlled Practice (7 minutes)

     Students complete a gap-fill activity using target vocabulary and sentence structure to

     reinforce accuracy.

4. Freer Practice (10 minutes)

     Students participate in a matching activity that combines conditional clauses,           

     encouraging peer interaction and spontaneous language use.

5. Plenary (5 minutes)

     Students complete conditional sentences aloud, reinforcing learning and allowing for

     informal assessment of understanding.

Assessment Strategy
